ApotheKary Frankly Tallow Extremely In-depth Write-up-Grab a chair!
Here is a very thorough summary of each of the ingredients in Frankly Tallow:
Well folks, I hate to break it to ya, but tallow is animal oil that has been slowly and carefully kettle rendered from the suet of animals like organically-farmed and grass-fed/finished cows or sheep or emu.
KAT!!! COW FAT?? ON MY FACE AND BODY??!
YES!!!! Yesssssssss. This is one oil our body absorbs more readily than any other. There is a vitamin profile in animal oils (A, D, E, and K) that is a one-of-a-kind combo that cannot be found in plant-based oils alone. Tallow is a super-ingredient boost for the powerful essential oils in Frankly Tallow.
Look, tallow contains the same fats or lipids found in healthy, supple human skin and lipids are found in abundance in the membrane of every cell in our bodies! They are responsible for the free flowing of liquids (aka moisture) in and out of our cells. Lipids are beneficial because they create a protective, yet permeable barrier that prevents infection, maintains moisture, flexibility and structure of the cell. As a result of all that sciencey-stuff, tallow prevents dryness at the cellular level without suffocating the skin's barrier. Additionally, tallow and sebum (the oil in our skin) share many of the same lipids or fats in similar concentrations. It is this similarity that allows tallow to absorb thoroughly into to our thirsty skin.
There are many skin troubles that will greatly benefit from the use of tallow. It can be used for face cream, body moisturizer, wounds, tattoo healing, bug bites, razor burn, rashes, burns, cellulite, stretchmarks, scars, dry skin, itchy skin, scalp treatment, roseacea, psoriasis, eczema, cracked feet/heels, stretch mark prevention, age spots, facial moisturizer and balancer, and acne care, to name a few. It’s basically the super-hero of skincare. The wow factor of tallow is its compatibility with your skin – It is so easy for our body to use and to absorb! It’s almost as if our skin recognizes it.
Combo of vitamins A, D, E, and K that you can only find in an animal oil.
These fatty acids are found naturally in youthful and glowing skin and tend to decline as we age.
Palmitic Acid – Protects skin from the environment and smooths.
Omega 7 (Palmitoleic Acid) – Anti-microbial.
CLA – Calms inflamed skin and kills bacteria.
Stearic Acid – Found in our own skins’ oils, this amazing fatty acid brings moisture to the skin, softens, rejuvenates and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Omega 9 (Oleic Acid) – Awesome carrier to the other oils and helps nutrients penetrate deep into the skin.
It feels greasy! BUT it won’t make you oily: An article from acne.org talks about the wonders of oil cleansing here: “Fact: Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principals of chemistry is that “like dissolves like.” The best way to dissolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil, is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: Other oils. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin. When done properly and consistently, the OCM can clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne–while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.”
From the SKINtervention Guide:
“The Fatty Acid profile of grass-fed, pasture-raised tallow (yes-tallow!) is incredibly close to that of the human skin cell. Tallow has been used as a nourishing moisturizer for centuries…”
“Healthy, ‘toned’ skin cells with sufficient saturated and monounsaturated fats would undoubtedly make for healthy, toned skin. Interestingly, tallow fat is typically 50 to 55 percent saturated, just like our cell membranes, with almost all of the rest being monounsaturated, so it makes sense that it would be helpful for skin health and compatible with our cell biology.”
In regard to this compatibility of tallow with the biology of our skin, we should note that we are animals rather than plants, so the modern taboo against animal products in skin care products would seem unfounded and even illogical. In addition to containing very little saturated fats, plant products do not have the same levels of other nutrients needed for healthy skin. Tallow contains the abundant natural fat-soluble activators, vitamins A, D, and K, as well as vitamin E, which are found only in animal fats and which are all necessary for general health and for skin health.”
It may seem strange at first, but once you see and feel the difference it makes in your skin, you’ll forget all about the cow part and throw out all the expensive chemicals and potions. Ha!
Fannie and Flo have some things to say about their super special tallow-From the company that I purchase the tallow from!
“We respect that you have done out of your way to find such a basic and humble product that we still make in the most simple fashion. It’s certainly a far cry from years of feeling like the “Black Market Ladies of the Lard Cartel”, hiding jars in brown paper bags like so many quarts of backwoods hooch! Lard and Tallow are back “en vogue” and so socially acceptable that we can all feel free to flaunt our fat without shame. We hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoy rendering it for you. Not much has changed in the process since we first learned how to render. It takes a lot of time, technique and patience to produce the very best. We still open-kettle render in small batches. It was just after war time when we were little girls and necessities were still very scarce. Those were the days of use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without! Something as simple as having stored lard and tallow gave us a sense of security and we knew that we could provide for ourselves. Every crock and every jar was precious, with the leaf lard stored alone on the highest shelf in the cellar-it was saved for ‘something special’. We dipped tallow candles to keep on hand as electric power was expensive, and outages frequent. Rendering tallow pure enough to make candles, and knowing the secrets to making the whitest and creamiest lard was truly the source of much pride and envy. This was a skill (as we were told) that was certain to help land a good husband! Perhaps that’s why we married young - the “Finch girls” were always envied for producing a fine tub of fat!
ADDRESSING THE MOST COMMON CONCERNS:
You needn’t look far nowadays to find any number of free-range; grove-grazed; open-range; home on the range; GE Free; bounced on my knee; Non-GMO; Pro-Amino; Grass-fed; Outdoor-bred; straw-cushioned or spoon-fed claims when it comes to food sources and we can choose whatever strikes our fancy. Regardless of where you find your lard or tallow, natural fats are where true ‘Organic’ REALLY DOES matter. We all try to make the healthiest possible choices and are fast returning to the basics of sustainability. We understand that excess ‘fat soluble’chemicals can and will be stored in fat. Common sense alone dictates that the fewer toxins any animal (or person) is exposed to, the fear toxins will be stored in its fat. Argue the pros and cons as we may, true organically-raised animals simply consume and store fewer toxins.
The fats we render are from small family farms, members of the Organic Farmers Co-op producing certified organic products. The livestock is raised without antibiotics, synthetic hormones, or pesticide exposure. They are seasonally-grazed and are not offered genetically modified fodder. We take pride that since August 2015 all of our tallow comes from grass-fed stock (retired organic dairy producers).”
Aaaaaand, not to get too technical, but I’m going to insert some ‘Frankin-science’ about Frankincense essential oil:
From the “Effects of topical boswellic acid on photo and age-damaged skin: clinical, biophysical, and echographic evaluations” in a double-blind, randomized, split-face study. Alessandra Pedretti 1 , Rossana Capezzera, Cristina Zane, Elena Facchinetti, Piergiacomo Calzavara-Pinton
Abstract
Boswellic acids (BAs) are pentacyclic triterpenes with strong anti-inflammatory activity; their most important source is the extract of the gum resin of Boswellia serrata, a tropical tree that grows in India and Africa. In the present randomized, double-blind, split-face, comparative study we have assessed efficacy, tolerability, and safety of a base cream containing 0.5 % BAs as compared to the same cream without these active ingredients in the treatment of clinical manifestations of photoaging of facial skin. Fifteen female volunteers were enrolled; they applied creams once daily for 30 days. At baseline, at the end of the treatment, and after a 2-month follow-up, clinical findings were assessed according to the Dover classification scale for photoaging and by biophysical and ecographic measurements. We registered a significant improvement of tactile roughness and fine lines in the half side of the face treated with BAs; noninvasive instrumental diagnostic investigations showed an improvement of elasticity, a decrease of sebum excretion, and a change of echographic parameters suggesting a reshaping of dermal tissue. The treatment was always well tolerated without adverse effects. The present findings seem to indicate that the topical application of BAs may represent a suitable treatment option for selected features of skin photoaging.
Frankincense is well-renowned in skin care, and coupled with tallow as its carrier— you have a simple, but powerful skincare product. There are several trees of the genus Boswellia from which frankincense is collected: Boswellia Carterii, Boswellia Sacra, Boswellia Frereana, Boswellia Serrata, Boswellia Papyrifera, Boswellia Neglecta and Boswellia Rivae. Frankincense is the resin of these trees. All these varieties produce different resins and so different essential oils. All are distinguished by slightly different chemical compositions and therefore different aromas.
Frankincense essential oil begins as a sap. Most of the trees in the Boswellia genus produce sap, but two species specifically – the Boswellia sacra and the Boswellia carteri – produce the highest grade frankincense. During certain times of the year, the tree is cut in several places, allowing the sap to pour out. Once the sap is collected, it’s allowed to harden into a thick substance called resin. The essential oil is then collected from the resin using a process called steam distillation.
Frankincense Serrata: The soothing resin derived from Boswellia Serrata has been used since ancient times in Indian medicine (known as Ayurveda) as a healing remedy for arthritis and joint pain. There have been more than a hundred chemical compounds found in the gum resins of the Boswellia species, many of which are beneficial to the skin. One of these terpenoid compounds, known as boswellic acid, acts by inhibiting the specific enzymes responsible for inflammation (5-lipoxygenase) and associated cell damage (human leukocyte elastase). A known anti-inflammatory, Boswellia Serrata is also used for anti-aging treatments and acne medications. Boswellia Serrata BT has been clinically shown to improve skin elasticity and visibly reduce wrinkle depth, for firmer skin
Frankincense Frereana: Frankincense Boswellia Frereana Essential Oil, also known as Frankincense 'Maydi', is the queen of the Frankincense family. This particular type grows at a higher elevation than its sister species, Boswellia Carterii, and offers a diverse range of skin benefits. This resource was once a rare commodity that was used in many cultures for its therapeutic possibilities, especially for skin care.
The anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, cytophylactic, and tonic compounds found in Frankincense Boswellia Frereana Essential Oil are impressive and collectively make up a magic potion for your skin. It is rich with stringent and cytophylactic qualities, which means it is able to effectively reduce the appearance of wrinkles and combat skin imperfections like discoloration. Those same stringent and cytophylactic qualities also stimulate the growth of new cells in your skin faster, which means you can recover from wounds and cuts much more quickly. The anti-inflammatory effects are able to reduce skin redness, swelling, itching and can even tighten and disinfect your pores to fight against scar visibilities (including acne scars) and prevent acne from forming altogether. Often used by skin moisturizer brands for its hydrating elements, Frankincense Boswellia Frereana Essential Oil is perfect for keeping skin from drying out because of its natural moisturizing effects.
Frankincense Carterii
Boswellia Carterii, which is the best known of frankincense, originates from Somalia and the Arabian Peninsula. The main chemical component found in this essential oil is alpha-pinene. This chemical compound helps repair the epidermis. It also ensures the impermeability and skin protection as it stimulates keratin production. Boswellia Carterii essential oil is anti-infectious thanks to the monoterpenes which prevent the development of fungi and bacteria. The anti-inflammatory action of this essential oil is provided by sesquiterpenes. Thanks to all of these compounds, it’s very effective in helping heal wounds and scars, acne, ulcers, boils, etc. and helps regenerate and delay the aging of the skin.
TRY THIS! I triple-dog dare you.
Rinse your face (or wherever you are using Frankly Tallow) several times with nice warm water. Unless you rolled around in mud, there is no need to scrub with any crazy soap or even natural soap. JUST WATER. I have seen people with acne that wash and scrub and tone and mask and medicate and their acne and other skin problems persist and even worsen. All those chemicals-your skin is screaming “Stop it!”. All that stuff is irritating!!! So, please try this instead…put all your face products in the closet. THEN TAKE A PICTURE of your face. It’s fun to do this daily to see your progress. Look- this is a treatment, like any other treatment!! Take it seriously!! Do this simple 1-2 times ritual daily. If you don’t see a change in a week, keep doing it. Your skin needs a change to get used to the new routine after being beat up with chemicals. If you don’t see a difference in 14 days, send me an e-mail and tell me “This stuff is B.S.!!”. I’ll send your money back and tell you to keep using it because I know it will do its job with a little more patience. Just like any other face treatment/skincare ritual—you must be diligent and consistent. Also——-you may be tempted to keep touching your face as the magic happens—-DON’T!!!!!! Keep your dirty fingers away from your face!!!! Only touch your skin with super clean hands and washcloths.
A little goes a long way!! I mean it. You could easily get 75 applications from this jar!! That’s why it’s a little pricey! And the amount and quality of essential oils-it is not cheap to make. So—I repeat: A little goes a long way. If it feels greasy, it’s because you used too much! After applying, wait 5 minutes and then feel free to take a warm moist washcloth and GENTLY PAT the excess away.
If you have oily skin, definitely give it a couple weeks for your skin to balance out oil and sebum production. You will be tickled pink.
Send me your pictures!!!
